Trent Lock is located near to Long Eaton on border of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. It is a major junction on the inland waterways network, where the River Soar and Erewash Canal can reach the Trent and Mersey Canal by way of the River Trent and adjacent Cranfleet Cut.
The Canal & River Trust manages two sites in the vicinity of the Lock. Directly above the lock is a linear berth which can accommodate a breasted up pair of boats. A short distance beyond are 6 berths for large static vessels.

There is a small selection of shops and a railway station in Sawley village, approximately one mile away to the north east.
